Faith’s Companion: The Will (Word) Of God. Romans 1:17: “…The just shall live by faith” I John5:14-15: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desire of him.” Acting in faith must have ground to stand on, a foundation, you know, something that will give faith its ability to land on its feet so to speak. That very special something is the revealed written will of God (the Bible) rightly divided. It is like a wealthy person telling you not to worry about your expenses for they are taking care of them. At the moment they make that statement you have nothing visible or tangible, but nevertheless your worries disappear and you move forward based on their word and reputation. What exactly are we saying here? It is that we do not have faith in faith, but faith in someone. In fact it is faith in what that someone, who is God, has promised! For truly the Lord has said that His word would not come back to Him void, but that it would accomplish what He sent it to do (Isaiah 55:11). It gets the job done every time. When you think about it the Word is not only faith’s companion, but also its foundation. Let us not forget that “…faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” That’s why we claim things in faith while quoting the verse(s) that go/goes along with the given situation or circumstance we are dealing with. Peter and his friends had been fishing all night and caught nothing. However, after Jesus had used his boat to preach to the people, He told Peter to launch out into the deep and let down his nets for a huge load of fish. Peter in spite of complaining that they had already worked all night and caught nothing, acted in faith and said “….nevertheless AT THY WORD I will let down the net.” That simple act of faith, based on the word, got him much more than he expected (Luke 5:1-8). Let us learn from this and act, not on a whim, but in faith that is based on the WORD OF GOD. |
